How to Prepare for an Ultrasound

1–2 days before an abdominal ultrasound (ultrasound of the gallbladder, liver, pancreas, or spleen), it is recommended to avoid legumes, cabbage, and dairy products. This diet reduces gas formation, making abdominal organs such as the pancreas and gallbladder clearly visible. Refrain from eating for 6–8 hours before the procedure; only water is allowed.

Before a transabdominal ultrasound of the prostate, bladder, uterus, or other pelvic organs, the bladder should be full. To do this, drink 1 liter of water about 1 hour before the examination and avoid urination.

Transvaginal ultrasound of female reproductive organs or transrectal ultrasound of the prostate does not require special preparation.

Ultrasound Procedure

During an ultrasound of internal organs and tissues, the patient lies on a couch. The doctor applies a special conductive gel to the skin and moves the probe over the area being examined. The images of the organs and blood vessels are displayed on a monitor.
